Gain knowledge on how to manage your money for the long term, without the stress of constantly chasing the next big investment. I focus on financial behavior and psychology, not just the technical aspects of managing money.
Navigating Life Transitions
If you’re going through a major life event—divorce, a career change, or the challenges of being a first-generation immigrant—this blog will offer guidance on how to make informed financial decisions during these times.
Building Generational Wealth
It’s not just about accumulating money for yourself. I’ll show you how to use your wealth to support your family, invest in your future, and build a legacy that lasts for generations.
This isn’t a place for investment-picking advice or quick-rich schemes. Instead, I focus on the psychology of money—how your beliefs and behaviors around wealth shape your financial success. You’ll find educational resources, insights into long-term planning, and tips on building a healthy relationship with money that goes beyond the numbers.
My Journey:
The Luck of Life’s Challenges
I didn’t start out wealthy, and I’m still not a millionaire—but I’ve learned that wealth has less to do with how much you have and more to do with how you grow from your experiences. Looking back, my story is one of both luck and hardship, and every experience along the way was an opportunity for growth.
Luck in My Beginnings
I was born into a middle-class family in Saigon, Vietnam. My father is a neurosurgeon, and my mother ran a clothing manufacturing business. I had access to top-tier education in Vietnam and even spent time studying in England. But even this “luck” wasn’t enough to protect us from life’s twists and turns.
The Fall: Lessons from Hardship
While I was doing my studies abroad, my mother made a series of bad business deals, and our family hit rock bottom. We lost everything. I had to leave England before completing my education, and returned home feeling like a failure. I was depressed, lost, and ashamed. This period of my life seemed unlucky, but in retrospect, it was a turning point. That was how I started my interest in learning about money, how it works, and how to control it instead of letting it control my life.
As life was progressing and I was doing well, there was another twist during COVID. I broke away from a 10 year marriage, and started my life again. The process was hard, but my love for finance grew even deeper. I realized how much power I had with financial literacy knowledge, and I owe it to the world to share that with others.
Rushing for a Quick Fix
Like many first-generation immigrants, I felt an intense pressure to succeed fast and bring financial stability back to my family. I abandoned my dream of becoming a cosmetic doctor and moved to the U.S. to pursue a degree in finance, hoping it would make me rich quickly. I attended community college in Seattle, studying finance with the same single-minded goal: to become wealthy fast.
I invested in penny stocks, started small businesses, and tried various high-risk ventures. The result? Failure after failure. But every loss brought a new lesson, and slowly, I started to realize that wealth isn’t built through shortcuts. Wealth is built through educated, long-term decisions that are designed to weather the storms of life.
Life’s hardships taught me resilience, discipline, and the value of long-term planning. Every setback was an opportunity to learn and grow, even if I couldn’t see it at the time.
Shifting My Mindset: From Scarcity to Abundance
Through my failures, I began to understand that wealth has less to do with risky ventures and more to do with mindset. For too long, I operated from a place of scarcity—focusing on what I lacked and the pressure to make up for it. It wasn’t until I shifted my focus to abundance—what I already had and what I could grow—that things began to change.
Stability Over Speculation
While I was studying, the things that truly helped me were simple: a personal emergency fund I’d saved before my family lost everything, the support of friends, and stable, long-term jobs like tutoring and working as an analyst at my university. These roles weren’t glamorous or fast-paced, but they provided stability and helped me build a strong foundation for my future.
The Importance of Long-Term Planning
The wealthiest individuals I’ve worked with during my career in wealth management all have one thing in common: they focus on long-term growth, not quick wins. They don’t chase the latest stock tip or flashy investment trend. Instead, they invest steadily, value financial education, and make intentional decisions that align with their life goals.
This mindset shift—moving from scarcity and urgency to abundance and patience—changed everything for me. I began to focus on what I could build over time, not what I could gain in the short term.
My journey has taught me that building wealth is about much more than money. It’s about personal growth, resilience, and learning to approach life with an abundance mindset. Now, as a CFP Professional (CFP®), a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA®), and Wealth Advisor at Morton Wealth, an independent Registered Investment Advisor which helps many individuals, families, and business owners grow and preserve their wealth, I’m here to share those lessons with you.
My goal is to help you build confidence in your financial decisions, especially if you’re going through a tough life transition or are a first- or second-generation immigrant navigating the complexities of building wealth in a new country. I want to create a space where financial security feels achievable and where money becomes a tool for growth, not a source of stress.
